MAINTENANCE OF THREE OR FOUR-WHEELED VEHICLES

triporteur et quadriporteur

Three and four-wheeled vehicles are very useful for older adults who require assistance in moving around the home and community. These vehicles represent an important investment in improving the quality of life of older adults.

Vehicles in this class should receive preventive maintenance to repair any damaged parts.

To perform maintenance on this class of vehicles I present the following recommendations.

Battery check

Generally, batteries in three- and four-wheeled vehicles yield a percentage of kilometers per charge. If the vehicle has less mileage and discharges early, then you need to check the batteries.

Avoid exposing your scooter to moisture, if you can't avoid it at least remove the battery and use a protective cover. If your vehicle gets wet, dry it out immediately and pay attention to the batteries.  Avoid using it while it is drying.

In the winter season, the scooter should be kept free of moisture and remember to keep the batteries charged. Check the charge every four weeks to maintain durability.

Careful planning of your journeys will allow you to monitor the battery, so that it does not become completely discharged. Do not replace the battery with a car battery as this may cause irreparable damage.

Cleaning the scooter

Three- and four-wheeled vehicles must be kept clean, as dust, moisture, water and snow can easily damage them. Use a dry cloth to clean the electrical parts and a damp cloth for the chair. From time to time, have the inside of the scooter checked by an authorised mechanic.

The wheels

Always pay attention to the wheels when driving the scooter. The wheels should move smoothly and quietly. Periodically check the tyre pressure on the wheels. If you find any objects stuck or nailed to the wheels, do not remove them and go to an authorised repairer.

The tyre tread must maintain an acceptable depth, and if it is worn, the grip on the ground will be reduced and there may be a problem in bends.

Maintenance of other parts of three- and four-wheeled vehicles

In vehicles for motorized mobility you must verify that each component is not damaged, since due to the use the parts are worn out and it is better to repair or replace them.

- The scooter's armrests. Make sure the scooter's arms are raised and lowered properly. They must not rub against the rest of the seat.

- The brakes. Most scooters should have their brakes serviced at least once every three months. But depending on the use of the vehicle, the more daily use the more maintenance is required on the brakes.

- It is also advisable to have the brakes professionally cleaned by a mechanic before the scooter develops any serious problems.
